Undergraduate Major
2007-2008
Students may choose either one of the following two types of programs for
their major. In all cases, it is the student who is ultimately responsible
for meeting departmental requirements for the major. Students are expected
to be familiar with the relevant policies of the Academic Catalogue and are
urged to consult with the undergraduate advisor throughout their undergraduate
career at the University.
- Structured major
- The major for the Bachelor of Arts degree requires completion of JPN
416 (2nd semester, 3rd year) or 2 semesters chosen from CHN 403, 404,
415, 417 or 418, or the equivalent level of Chinese or Japanese language,
and a minimum of 34 units beyond the second year of language. A minimum
of 25 units beyond the second year of language must be in the department.
- At least 6 units must be at the 400 level. A total of 9 units of work
must have a single disciplinary focus. To provide breadth, a minimum of
9 units must be taken from 3 of the following disciplines: Chinese and
Japanese history, cultural anthropology, linguistics, literature, religion
and thought.
- In addition to #2 above, there is a 1 unit Senior Capstone course (EAS
498) requirement to complete, which includes a senior project.
- EAS major in an IDS (Interdisciplinary Studies) package
(three 24 unit fields, 12 upper division units in each, no minor)
- The EAS field requires completion of 24 units including:
- To provide breadth a minimum of 9 units taken from 3 of the following
disciplines: Chinese and Japanese history, cultural anthropology,
linguistics, literature, religion and thought.
- The 1 unit senior requirement, as described in A3 above.
- 12 units of either country- or discipline-based curriculum.
- The second field requires completion of at least 24 units in one EAS
language (Note that in Japanese, extra courses may be required to fulfill
the upper division credit requirement for the minor.)
- The third field 24 unit should be chosen to complement the EAS focus
and to contribute to the student’s career objectives.
- At least 6 units must be at the 400 level. A total of 9 units of work

9 units must be taken from 3 of the following disciplines: Chinese and
Japanese history, cultural; anthropology, linguistics, literature, religion
and thought.
