Undergraduate Major

2007-2008

Students may choose either one of the following two types of programs for their major. In all cases, it is the student who is ultimately responsible for meeting departmental requirements for the major. Students are expected to be familiar with the relevant policies of the Academic Catalogue and are urged to consult with the undergraduate advisor throughout their undergraduate career at the University.

  1. Structured major
    1. The major for the Bachelor of Arts degree requires completion of JPN 416 (2nd semester, 3rd year) or 2 semesters chosen from CHN 403, 404, 415, 417 or 418, or the equivalent level of Chinese or Japanese language, and a minimum of 34 units beyond the second year of language. A minimum of 25 units beyond the second year of language must be in the department.

    2. At least 6 units must be at the 400 level. A total of 9 units of work must have a single disciplinary focus. To provide breadth, a minimum of 9 units must be taken from 3 of the following disciplines: Chinese and Japanese history, cultural anthropology, linguistics, literature, religion and thought.

    3. In addition to #2 above, there is a 1 unit Senior Capstone course (EAS 498) requirement to complete, which includes a senior project.

  2. EAS major in an IDS (Interdisciplinary Studies) package (three 24 unit fields, 12 upper division units in each, no minor)

    1. The EAS field requires completion of 24 units including:
      1. To provide breadth a minimum of 9 units taken from 3 of the following disciplines: Chinese and Japanese history, cultural anthropology, linguistics, literature, religion and thought.

      2. The 1 unit senior requirement, as described in A3 above.

      3. 12 units of either country- or discipline-based curriculum.
    2. The second field requires completion of at least 24 units in one EAS language (Note that in Japanese, extra courses may be required to fulfill the upper division credit requirement for the minor.)

    3. The third field 24 unit should be chosen to complement the EAS focus and to contribute to the student’s career objectives.

    4. At least 6 units must be at the 400 level. A total of 9 units of work must have a single disciplinary focus. To provide breadth, a minimum of 9 units must be taken from 3 of the following disciplines: Chinese and Japanese history, cultural; anthropology, linguistics, literature, religion and thought.
